27 Barotse Activists Appear in Court Twenty seven out of the 45 Barotse activists yesterday appeared in a Mongu Magistrate Court. The 27, who are charged with riotous behavior, appeared before a zambian Magistrate Beranard Mwanandiwa and will return to court on September 3 for mention. Forty five activists were arrested for brandishing placards with celebratory methods after Afumba Mombotwa was sworn in as administrator general. The youths took to the street in celebration but police crashed the rebellion with heavy handedness and rounded up over 45 people although independent sources say the numbers are higher. Barotseland, which is predominately Western Province, has been a political hot potato with the residents demanding freedom citing the government’s failure to honour the Barotse Agreement of 1964 that the PF had promised to deliver upon ascending to power. The rest of the activists were by press time yet to know when their day in court would come.
