270614 When he came down from the mountain, great crowds followed him. And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed (Matthew 8:1-3) This leper understood completely the the principle of Gods sovereignty. He obviously knew that Jesus was capable of healing him or he wouldnt have asked him in the first place. And yet he did not pray Lord, make me clean in the manner of demand, but rather recognising that Jesus as God had no obligation at all to do anything he didnt want to. The leper is mindful of Psalm 115: Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases. and therefore makes his prayer recognising that if it does not please Jesus to do it, he will not. When we recognise God for who he is - Lord and King, sovereign over all things in glory and majesty, we put him in his proper place and then we have the right to be amazed that he is bothered at all with someone as insignificant as ourselves, never mind pour out all his love and grace upon those who love him. The Lord is not our mate, someone we can tag along and hang out with when we fancy a bit of company. He is the Lord, creator of heaven and earth, the name above all names, desiring our company; how fantastic is that? Ill bet that is what the leper thought when Jesus said “I will; be clean.”
