27th AUGUST, 1914 At Etreux, the 2nd Royal Munster Fusiliers successfully hold a force six times their size for fourteen hours, allowing the BEF to retreat in good order from Mons. Upon their defeat, the survivors are congratulated by the Germans and complimented for their extreme bravery. Ostend, Belgium, is occupied by a mixed force of British Army and Royal Marines. The Protected Cruiser HMS Highflyer sinks the German Commerce Raider SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. The Russians capture Tarnopol and Halicz in Austrian Galicia. The German light cruiser Magdeburg runs aground while sweeping the Gulf of Finland for mines. She is set upon by two Russian cruisers. British forces move in and seize a German wireless and codebooks. This allows the Royal Navy to intercept German and decode German naval communications for much of the war, and is directly responsible for the British interception of Germanys sortie at Jutland in 1916.
