2814s What I read this week! Welcome back folks its that time again for us to take a trip down comics back catalogue and this week in honour of the hellblazer pilot we have a storyline collected in issues of 1-9 of hellblazer with a little swampy tie in of issues 66-67 known as Original Sins! The comics were first published from 1987 onwards and as always this article MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS! As I mentioned I decided to go with original sins as the pilot leaked online this week. Although I have not watched the pilot yet I am filled with apprehension, the trailer I seen said to me “this will be awesome” however announcements since then such as our constantine wont be smoking. You might as well turn round and say its gonna be a PG programme so he wont ever swear either. For me this is not constantine, and I will no doubt get past that. However in order to ease my apprehension I decided to go back to the hellblazer I love. These were written by Jamie Delano and shows art from John Ridgway & Rick Veitch throughout this arc, Veitch is noted for his work on swamp thing. In this we begin with Mnemoth on the loose, if you don’t like bugs I suggest you stay away from this guy. However, we see our protagonist returning just in time to help sort things out. If you like hellblazer or comics that deal with any supernatural/horror elements then I highly suggest you check this out. The writing in this comic is executed well by delano and ties in nicely with constantines themes throughout the rest of the epic. The artwork is atypical of the late 80s early 90s art that I love in comics where you can see all the pencil strokes shine through showing the artists true talent. Not that artists nowadays don’t have true talent, its just that after they have drawn as with all sorts of things movies, tv etc it then often gets polished via computer. It also stands to reason that a lot of my favourite comics are from this era or earlier which is why it stands out so much for me. Overall I love Hellblazer, and I love going back to read the stuff I haven’t read in a little while as it captures my imagination no matter how many times I read it. With the Original sins story arc, it showcases exactly why vertigo existed and I only feel that the PC police are continuing to win out on the mainstream forms of media and comics as I didn’t care much for the new 52 constantine book. There’s not too much I can say that I didn’t like in this arc so instead I will leave you with a quote from Alan Moore to be found at the end of the first issue. “Jamie Delano & John Ridgway demonstrate brilliantly that English horror didnt vanish with the gas lit and cobblestones at the end of the Victorian era. Riveting, Spine-chilling stuff.” Thanks for reading this week. #hellblazer #constantine #jamiedelano #johnridgeway #originalsins (2814)
