28th November 2012: In 1966 between making Alfie and Funeral in Berlin Michael Caine made a little film with Shirley MacLaine called Gambit which was a comedy crime caper in which Caine played a cat burglar who found a dancer (MacLaine) who was a double for a wealthy tycoons wife to distract the Tycoon (played by Herbert Lom) so that he could steal a precious artifact I saw this as a teenager (in those days it took 5 or 6 years for a film to appear on TV) and quite enjoyed it Scroll forward 46 years - tonight we saw Gambit, a film starring Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz, with Alan Rickman in the Herbert Lom role. Theyve rejigged the story somewhat but the basic plot is still there. The difference is that while the 1966 film was a comedy, this version is a farce. Packed with lame jokes, running around hotels without trousers and at one stage a genuine fart gag. The characterisations were 2 dimensional, Cameron Diaz is no Shirley MacLaine, Rickman was a hammy caricature. The only actor to come out of this with any credence was Tom Courtney (playing an art forger) Colin Firth is a very good actor (The Kings Speech, Love Actually, even Mama Mia) but the man cannot pick a script to save his life (Gambit, St Trinians) he needs to get better people making his choices for him Avoid!!!!
