29 JULY 1914: Having enjoyed their holiday there in 1913, the Millards optimistically head off for the Continent for a holiday at the Grand Hotel (opened 1911) in Westende-le-Bains (Westende Bad) on the Belgian coast, by hansom cab, train and the boat from Harwich to Ostende, then presumably train along the coast. The journey takes two days, only to find that the Germans are advancing through Luxembourg the next day (1st August).
