29 January Today we celebrate the life of John Martyn, OBE. He was a British singer-songwriter and guitarist who released 21 studio albums and worked with artists such as Eric Clapton, David Gilmour and Phil Collins during his 40-year career. He was been described by The Times as “an electrifying guitarist and singer whose music blurred the boundaries between folk, jazz, rock and blues He was born Iain David McGeachy in Surrey, England to an English mother and a Scottish father. He lived with his grandmother after his parents were divorced and attended Shawlands Academy in Glasgow where he was a keen rugby player. His professional musical career began when he was 17, playing a blend of blues and folk which was a distinctive style and made him a key figure in the British folk scene. He received the lifetime achievement award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. And to mark his 60th birthday, Island Records released a 4CD boxed set “Ain’t No Saint” which included unreleased studio material and rare live recordings. He was appointed OBE in the 2009 New Year Honours list, but as he died in January 2009, It was presented posthumously to his daughter, Mhairi McGeachy and his partner, Teresa Walsh. Phil Collins said “John’s passing is terribly, terribly sad. I had worked with and known him since the late 1970s and he was a great friend.” Whilst BBC Radio 2’s folk presenter Mike Harding said: “John Martyn was a true original, one of the giants of the folk scene.” #Intimations-Online, #Celebrate a life, #John Martyn, #Folk music
