29 July, 1965. Naval Base at South Station. I had just turned eighteen. I was at the Naval Base being inspected, injected, and neglected. Hanging around. Smoking cigarettes. Doing exercises. Peeing in a jar. Being manhandled by Medical Corpsmen. Hanging around. Standing lines. Taking tests. Lunch on the food chit at Hays-Bickford. More hanging around. More tests. More questions. More unwanted medical attention. Then . . . Standing at attention with greasy hair and civilian clothes in front of a USMC Captain. Raise my right hand. I do solemnly swear to uphold and defend the Constitution . . . A bus ride to Logan. Flight to SC. Parris Island and wishing I had listened to my Old Man.
