29 October 2013 Dear Friends, Warmest greetings! First of all allow us to thank all those who participated and supported the recent abolish pork barrel rally on October 14, 2013. The program and the march were successful with more than a thousand participants from Filipino community. While some were unable to come, they nevertheless expressed their support by signing our Unity Statement calling for the abolition of the pork barrel system; prosecution of the corrupt government officials and private individuals; and the reallocation of the pork barrel funds to basic social services. The statement was signed by 80 organizations and submitted to the Philippine Consulate. Meanwhile several protest actions in different forms and magnitude are being held in Manila and in the different cities in the provinces as a response to the very slow progress in the investigation of the pork barrel scam. There were also attempts by the administration to mislead and confuse the Filipino people that the pork barrel was already abolished well in fact it is very much alive in the 2014 national budget, this time with different name and form. Recently, there were proposals for a “Peoples’ Initiative” as a way for the people to enact laws that will abolish the pork barrel system in the face of the government’s and Congress’ refusal to hid the peoples demands. No less than former Chief Justice Renato Puno suggested that a people power should take place to fight corruption in the government. Under these circumstances, we believe that we have to continue our actions and broaden the participation of the larger Filipino community in Hong Kong so we can contribute in putting more pressure to the Philippine government, the Congress and the Senate. In the light of these developments, may we invite you to join us in our Kapihang Migrante on November 10, from 2:00 to 5:00pm at the Li Hall St. John’s Cathedral, No.4-8 Garden Road, Central. For your confirmation or inquiries, please feel free to call Dolo (97472986), Sol (67135382), Eman (97585935), Vicky (93572125) or Betty (67634957). Thank you very much and we hope to see you in our Kapihang Migrante. Please also extend this invitation to all organizations in your network. Sincerely yours, Dolores Balladares-Pelaez Chairperson
