29 years ago india trembled as Sikhs were targeted and massacred in the streets of Delhi. There is a school of thought that holds that these tragic events , linked as they are to the 1947 partition , were directly caused by the hasty retreat of the British from India. Ironic therefore that the socio political sentiments of the very Sikhs who were cherished as the sword arm of the Empire would be so grievously betrayed by colonial administrators and politicians. The move by the UK Parliament to push forward the transfer of power from June 1948 to August 1947 left a great many issues unresolved, not least that of the political destiny of the Sikhs.
