29th May 2013: No Cinema this week, Julie and Claire were at a Star Trek Shore Leave party at Alton Towers so no way to get to the cinema However I shall let you know my opinions of Star Trek Into Darkness which I have seen twice now (although Julie has seen it 5 times) Like Gatsby, I have to declare a prejudice when it comes to Start Wreck , Im a bit of a trekkie (although not as much as my wife and daughter, as evidenced by their Alton Towers trip) and pretty much anything they do in the ST film world is fine by me! Dont worry there will be no spoilers in this review - I wouldnt want to ruin anybodys enjoyment I really enjoyed the reboot film a few years ago and thought the characterisations of the original roles were wonderfully done (except Scottie who I think Simon Pegg turned into a clown!) and was coupled with a strong storyline that was well told. So I like Star Trek, I think Cummerbatch is a superb actor, and JJ Abrams is a safe pair of hands in any film he has done - so this was going to be a great film wasnt it? Its a very good story, Cummerbatch is superb (and chilling), the crew of the Enterprise are in fine form (even Scottie - who is no longer just played for laughs), there are lots of in jokes for Trekkies to enjoy and some of the reversals of roles in the new timeline are very clever, also the special effects are stunning. So why was I left at the end feeling vaguely disappointed? I cant put my finger on it but it failed to satisfy, and I cant figure out why. Maybe it was the editing, or Abrams overuse of lens flare, whatever it was it was subtle because the whole was less than the sum of its parts I did see something on TV about the first film where Abrams said he showed a near final cut to a friend who said it was great but he hated Kirk played by Pine, so Abrams went back into edit and made a series of tiny cuts (totalling about 15 seconds) and showed it to his friend again - this time he loved Kirk. I dont know if he showed the same friend the near final cut of Into Darkness but if he did they didnt work the magic this time Maybe I am being too hard on it, it is a good film and is a lot better than some of the tripe I have seen this year, but for me it is not a Great Film Go and see it - youll enjoy it - but this one wont be the one you talk about in years to come (like I still talk about Star Trek: First Contact)
