2ID History for Sept. 23 On 23 SEP 1951, 1/23rd IN assaulted Hill 931 on Heartbreak Ridge. The unit mounted 4 concerted assaults on the crest of the hill before A/1/23rd IN finally was able to hold onto the hilltop. A fierce NKPA counterattack that night forced them from the crest again. US Army On 23 SEP 1806, after two and a half years, the Corps of Discovery lead by CPT Meriwether Lewis and Lt William Clark returned to the city, bringing back a wealth of information about the largely unexplored region, as well as valuable U.S. claims to Oregon Territory.
