2nd May 1998 - Ta Qali National Stadium Birkirkara had the perfect opportunity to open the score from the penalty spot, but Vallettas goalkeeper Reginald Cini saved Joe Brincats shot leaving the Birkirkara supporters in disappointment. The Citizens opened the score by youngster Stefan Gilgio when he invented a first-timer rocket shot into the top-corner of the net putting the Valletta fans in a delirium of joy. Birkirkara equalized when a low cross into the box met the ex-Valletta Ivan Zammit who striked into the net, a goal which raised hope once again for the stripes. In the second half Valletta were awarded a penalty from which half-veteran Joe Zarb braught on the winning goal for the team, leaving the Birkirkara fans in tears of sorrow and the Valletta fans once again in tears of joy. Several seats were thrown into the pitch by the angry stripes and a large number of Citizens invaded the pitch in massive unique celebrations of the second conseutive title and the 16th in the clubs history. ~ TimesOfMaltaArchive
