2nd Team v Calcot at Home On a very hot and muggy day we welcomed Geoff Dormer and his Calcot team to Sonning for what we knew would be a very difficult fixture and so it proved to be. The Scots lead the way with a comfortable 6&4 win with Paul ‘Short’ Brady giving a fine example of how to play from tee to green however he did come up a tad short on a few of his puts which was pointed out to him on several occasions including the match analysis in the bar. I was going to get him to collect the match fees but was a bit worried they too would be short. A very delicate Peter Hodges (just recovering from having Kidney stones removed) partnered a determined Shawn Donovan but up against an inspired Andy ‘Scary’ Carey in his usual outrageous attire ran out second best going down 3&2. A new partnership of Andy Keer and Wayne Edwards were pitted against one of Calcot’s strongest pairing and although both played well they were piped 2 &1. And so it came down to the last group with Richard Shillito and Trevor Smith involved in an up and down match and were 3 up at one stage. A brilliant birdie on the last by Trevor made it honours even in the game but sadly not in the match. Sonning were defeated 1½ to 2½. This was our first defeat of the season but, clinging on to straws, we are still undefeated when Richard leads the team out. The highlight of the day whilst sitting in the bar was hearing that Bill Branagh had scored a hole in one and that a very welcome drink was on its way – Cheers Bill.
