► 3:05► 3:05 youtube/watch?v=6l6vqPUM_FE I dont want to set the world on fire... My mother would jokingly say that. For years I never quite understood what she meant. It seemed she would use the phrase almost as an excuse to underachieve or give less than 100%... I got a little older and heard Billy Joel...I dont want clever conversation... And I never want to work that hard... I just want someone to talk to... I love you just the way you are... Years Later I found myself reading Maureen Stapletons obituary. Ive never seen any of her movies so I dont know why I read it. Apparently She was a character actress, never a leading lady and once... after she retired she was asked if she ever regretted never being the leading lady. She told the interviewer about the one time she was up for the lead. She competed with another young lady who had become neurotic and physically Ill because of her desire and anxiety about the role and whether she would receive it. Maureen said, I realized at that moment I never wanted to want anything that badly... I realized my mothers quote was from a song some time ago. I didnt know it was from The Ink Spots. And I had herd the song, but never the whole thing. I always thought the song was used in the final scene of The Shining where you see Jack Nicholsons character looks exactly like the previous caretaker of the Overlook Hotel. They show a pic from the 20s... Play a tiny with a nice melody and fade to black. ANYWAY... I uttered one of my favorite phrases... Average is Under rated... Which is kinda what my mother said... We all could be better... But somewhere along the way we find good enough... Or happiness or love or whatever you want to call it. When you find IT youll know what youve been looking for. Today when I said, Average is over rated, I instinctively followed it up with... I dont want to set the world on fire... My WYYZ Technical Director Jill Street added, I just want to start a flame in your heart!... I love the Ink Spots! I said Is that who that is? I always wanted to learn that song... I googled it and without much more adieu... I bring you the The Ink Spots... Who were Hot at one time, but may not have Set the world on fire... To some they were great... But in the grand scheme of things they may have been closer to average when looking at the History of American music.... Which brings me back to what I was saying this morning... Average IS Under rated... And to quote my mother... I dont want to set the world on fire. Im willing to settle for leaving for igniting a flame that gives life or provides light. I think The Ink Spots achieved that.
