3.1.2015 Phony Kai Oh, God [1977], dir. Carl Reiner, starring John Denver and George Burns, is a film when God suddenly appears to a store manager and chooses him to be his mouthpiece that he indeed exists and for people not to believe the other religious mediators’ words. The intention of the movie is very clear! God exists; but not in any form that is packaged by either media or religious nuts. Since then the last few years Hindi cinema has taken great entertaining tropes to raise this question and eventually take an easy way out in the end. This begins with Lage Raho Munna Bhai [2006], who has to prove that Gandhi indeed preached and practiced his philosophy that has long since been forgotten by the nation that refers to him as The Father, followed by OMG, [2012], where an antique merchant decides to sue god for insurance damage, to today blockbuster PK [2013]. Relief in the film is the amazing energy of Anushka Sharma, Boman Irani and Sanjay Dutt. Aamir Khan in the past few years knows only to act in ads and TV shows. I have not seen him act in any film after Rangeela [1995]. A decade is long enough to mature in any craft. Corpiconia of E.T + Terminal + Pithamagan [posture, gestures] + Edward Scissorhands [makeup]=PK, a dangerous entertainer for its theme is going to be swallowed because of the floss; never questioning the serious intent. Is the premise merely: What if an alien lands on earth and has to return to his mother ship? If PK’s mission were simply this, then the film would have been an endearing emotional one. Unfortunately it isn’t—therein lies the danger. Religion gets reduced to signifiers—it never questions faith versus blind belief—instead it plays word game with ‘fear’ and ‘hope’. In fact it ends with Jaggu claiming, “PK taught us about the true god and in turn we taught to lie!!” The denouement is even weirder. PK is now a successful interstellar tourist guide for naked male aliens, equipped to teach them how to protect themselves in this earth. PK 2 will now test Ranbir Kapoor.
