3-26-14 One Teacher’s Thought Provoking Idiocy Did you happen to catch this story out of Australia about the teacher who took to Facebook to rip a student after he killed himself? The teacher’s foolish rant basically stated that the kid was a terrible bully and he was glad the 16 year old was dead. This was a ridiculously insensitive thing to do. I want to get that out of the way. The kid’s family found him less than 24 hours earlier. Just brutal. But for me, it raises a question. Where do you stand on this if the kid was as bad as the teacher says? Moving past this specific story- if bad people or even sort of bad people die- do you have to express sympathy? Are you allowed to be “ok” with it? I suppose saying “good, I’m glad so-and-so is dead” is over the top and probably just unhealthy. But upon hearing the news can you think- yeah, well worse things could happen? Thinking about people killed in a random mudslide… a four month old baby and her grandma are killed by a wall of mud while the mom/daughter is at yoga. I mean, really the death of any small or young child- it doesn’t get much worse than that, right? So I guess it reminds me of something I remember thinking when I heard Phillip Seymour Hoffman died, “Oh man… Ugggh, there are a lot of people I would have rather heard had died.” Is that messed up? I guess I think it’s ok. I’m not saying that I want anyone to die. But considering the fact that everyone dies and people are constantly doing it- I think maybe it’s fair to not have to feel bad when mean people die.
