3/27/14. UPDATE ON CHUCK By Mary Olds — 9 hours ago He has a headache today, which is a side effect of his injection last night. BUT, the side effects are getting milder with each passing day. He ate TWICE yesterday! At lunch he ate just a little bit of Carne Asada (hope I spelled that right!!! Pamela Sue) over a little bit of rice that Pamela brought over, and then, he got up after we had already gone to bed and ate some vegetable beef soup that I had cooked earlier in the day! He even came in the bedroom and told me it was the best I had ever made!! It is good, if I do say so myself!! Mike came over today and put a new commode in his bathroom for him. He has lost so much weight that the old one was VERY uncomfortable for him. So, now that problem will be gone! Poor guy has so many aches and pains that anything we can do to alleviate ANYTHING is a blessing for him. He had to lay off Ginger from the clinic today. He asked Amanda Shay to do it for him because he just wasnt up to it. Made us sad, but we are having to cut back where we can. Dr. Pam is doing a GREAT job at both clinics for him. We keep hearing the old and new patients singing her praises! That is such a weight off his shoulders. His patients mean the world to him and he has been so upset about not being able to be there to help them. Starting MONDAY, she will be working full time MONDAY thru FRIDAY at the clinics. Dr. Jayson and Meshia have been so kind in letting her leave their clinic in Smithville and come to work at our clinics full time! We have been so blessed throughout all of this by so many wonderful friends! Next Wednesday, we start the process of seeing an oncologist and surgeon at Vanderbilt. Does he want surgery, NO! If it should come down to surgery or his life, he most definitely would seriously consider it. He has been told by three different doctors since this journey began that THERE ARE MANY MORE AND MUCH BETTER OPTIONS OUT THERE rather than the old standard of removing the colon and living with a colostomy bag possibly for the rest of his life. So, he has decided to go ahead and explore all the options now so that if that time should come, he will know the best option for him and already be established with the surgeon he chooses. ONCE AGAIN, THANK GOD FOR CHOSEN FAMILY (close friends)! A dear friend called a wonderful surgeon (who had been recommended by one of Chucks doctors) that she knew both personally and professionally. She explained Chucks situation to him (come to find out, he does not do colon cancer surgery) and he told her which doctor to call that would be his top pick and also told her to tell us to use his name. Well, at first, the earliest we could get an appointment with that doctor was the middle of May, but after he found out which of his colleagues sent us to him, the scheduler called back and told us to be there next WEDNESDAY! Thank God for friends with pull!!! So, we are seeing the Vanderbilt Ingram Professor of Cancer Research & he is also a Professor of Medicine (Hematology/Oncology) & he is the Medical Director of Clinical Trials Shared Resources! After we consult with him at length and explain Chucks feelings about the colon surgery, then this doctor will refer us to the surgeon that he thinks is best (or the one that we have been told to see by the oncology surgeon friend of our friend) and we wont have to wait months to get to him! Thank you Pamela!!!! Chuck is up now and slowly getting dressed as his energy will let him. Hopefully, he will feel up to going to get his glasses from Dr. Wheeler later on this afternoon! We had planned to do that yesterday, but he just gave out before we got there ;(. Best at that my feeble and scrambled brain can recall, that is all that is new for now. We, again, want to say THANK YOU to all of our friends, family, & patients for everything you are doing for us. This has been quite a humbling experience and we are praying that we are learning the lessons God wants us to learn throughout this journey. We love you all and appreciate everything! Doc & Mary!!
