3,870 Benefit From DMCP Loan In Ethiope East BY ANDREW IKEHI THE Delta State Government, yesterday in Eku, Ethiope East Local Government Area of the State, beefed-up the tally of beneficiaries of its Micro-Credit Programme (DMCP) with the inclusion of additional 1,417 beneficiaries, comprising 141 cluster groups. The figure brings the total number of beneficiaries in the local government since inception of the programme seven years ago to 3,870 persons, comprising 386 cluster groups. Out of the total figure, 2,382 are females while 1,488 are male. This, according to the state government, has brought the total number of beneficiaries across the 25 local government areas of the state to over 111,000 beneficiaries. Presenting certificates to the beneficiaries for onward disbursements of the interest-free loan, the State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan said his administration is irrevocably committed to the project given its economic viability of poverty eradications and employment generation. Describing the interest-free loan as “seed money”, Governor Uduaghan explained that the programme which has attained both local and international recognitions was devoid of any form of political discrimination, adding that it was primarily aimed at enhancing the economic well-being of the ‘common man’ in the state. Uduaghan, while expressing confidence that the programme would outlive his administration given its economic viability as well as the fact that the beneficiaries have since taken ownership of the programme, enjoined Deltans, particularly youths in the state to take advantage of the programme to improve on their economic lives. He challenged youths in the state to desist from engaging themselves in dishonourable ventures, particularly criminality but embrace hard work, using the DMCP platform just as he told them to begin to plan for their old age now that they are still young. “This money is seed money that you must use to grow your business, it is not for you to buy cars, build houses or marry more wives”. “Let me also use this opportunity to advise youths to be hardworking and emulate those who have made it in life through genuine means, they should shun social vices and utilise empowerment programmes we have, because, this is the time for you to prepare genuinely for old age”, Uduaghan advised. The state Deputy Governor, Prof Amos Utuama (SAN) while saying that the loan was not a free donation from government but an interest-free loan to leverage on the economic lives of the beneficiaries, charged the beneficiaries to put the money into judicious use that guarantee them more dignified lives. Earlier, the state Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation, Dr Antonia Ashiedu had commended Governor Uduaghan for sustaining the programme, saying the state government has also taken some steps further to ensure the mitigations of risks for the over 111,000 beneficiaries of the programme, by introducing the Delta Micro-Insurance Scheme.
