3/9/14 Sunday Housy report: A nice brownie that customer Sal caught yesterday, one of 7 bows & browns landed by him on an egg fly. 2nd pic is a close-up of an Early Brown Stonefly nymph from the excellent site troutnut. Nice to see some fishermen foot traffic in the store Saturday, it was a beautiful early March day. Got a couple reports back, and they were positive- Sals buddy lost a whopper rainbow at the net. There were Early Brown Stonefly nymphs crawling up onto the stream edges when I did my river orientation in the morning, I put a cool short video of that up on our FaceBook page, take a peek its pretty cool to see. Flow & clarity remain excellent, the Housy has that fishy green tint to it that it tends to get in March, very pretty. In addition to various stonefly nymphs, try also egg patterns, they tend to work well in March. While not all the pull-outs are plowed, a decent number are, giving you access to various section of the river. The normal high/low temps for early March are 40/20 per weather, and by the end of the month 50/27- we arent quite there yet, but things are improving finally. The milder temps have theTiny Winter Black Stoneflies (Capnia, #18-20) & the Early Brown Stoneflies (#14-16) crawling out on the river banks recently- they are easy to see against the backround of snow. This month will also see the beginning of the Early Black Stones, running slightly bigger at about #12-14. It is quite a sight to watch them emerge along the stream edges, gets me pumped to fish! Having said all that, I personally usually do better fishing a big (#6-10) golden or brown stonefly nymph most days this time of year, they are a hard fly to beat in March. I usually drop something generic in #12-18 range off that, like a Prince, Pheasant Tail, or Hares Ear (all of which could approximate smaller stoneflies as well as other nymphs like an immature Hendrickson or Sulfur). -Torrey
