3 December 1941 the Nazis ordered the Jewish population of Horodenka in occupied eastern Poland (now Ukraine) to report for a typhus injection. Around 2,700 people gathered in the square in front of the synagogue. They were forced into this building and on the following day were taken to the nearby village of Siemakowce where they were murdered. You can find more about this massacre from the book I recently translated Under German Occupation. The photograph shows what is titled as the market in Horodenka around 1910 whilst the second photograph is slightly later - around 1912.
