3-day Senior National Rugby Championship concludes Gurezi highlights importance of sports, distributes trophies amongst players Delhi clinches final’s trophy SRINAGAR, AUGUST 25 – The 3-day Senior National Rugby Championship, (23-25 Sept) which was played at Bakshi Stadium concluded here today. The final match was played between the teams of Delhi and West Bengal. The Delhi team clinched the final’s trophy with huge margin. The Senior National Rugby Championship was played in Srinagar for the first time in the history of this game. The event was organized by the J&K Rugby Association in collaboration with the J&K State Sports Council under the aegis of Indian Rugby Football Union. As many as 20 teams from across the country, including Jammu and Kashmir participated in the event. More than 300 participants, who comprised players and supporting staff from different States, participated in the event. The Minister of State for Animal Husbandry, PHE, Irrigation & Flood Control, Mr. Nazir Ahmed Gurezi, who was chief guest on the concluding ceremony distributed the trophies and prizes amongst the players. The Runners up Trophy was handed over to West Bengal team while as J&K team was Plate winner, Kerela was Bowl winner and Mumbai was Shield winner. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Gurezi said that Kashmir Valley is best destination for organizing sports events of national level in view of its weather conditions, especially during the summer months when most parts of the country have heat wave conditions. He appreciated the efforts of the organizers for selecting the venue for holding such an important championship. He congratulated the winning team. He insisted on the organizers to hold regular events in different categories to promote this game, especially amongst the children in the state. Highlighting the importance of the sports, Mr. Gurezi said that sports strengthen the bilateral ties and mutual bonds between the players of different parts of the world. These events provide opportunities to the players of different parts to interact the cultural and other social issues which promote the communal harmony in the country. He asked the players to spread the message of peace in their respective States and encourage others to visit Kashmir to enjoy its natural beauty. Mr. Gurezi said that Government was committed to promote the sports activities in the State and several initiatives have been taken to strengthen the sports infrastructure in every nook and corner of the State. He said during the past 4-5 years so many major sports events have been organized in Kashmir Valley to promote sports activities amongst the younger generation to channelize their energy in positive direction. He said sports are as important as education for the overall development of the youth; therefore, every effort will be made to create opportunities for the promotion of different kinds of sports in the state. President J&K Rugby Association, Mr. Sarmad Hafiz and Secretary General Indian Rugby Football Union, Mr. Chaitanya Singh also spoke on the occasion and threw light on the importance of the Rugby game. They apprised that though this game is not much popular in the country, but during the past some years there is lot of enthusiasm in the players towards this game. Mr. Hafiz thanked all the participants and supporting agencies, especially the media for making this event a grand success. Prominent among those present on the occasion included, Joint Secretary J&K Sports Council, S. JBS Bali, Secretary J&K Marshal Arts Association, Mr. Imtiaz Ahmed, Captain of National Rugby team Mr. Nasir Hussain and large number of media persons and sports lovers.
