Wild Life Week celebrated by Science Centre Port Blair, Oct. 11 As part of 60th Wild Life Week celebration, the Port Blair, Science Centre has organized a “Bird Watching Programme” yesterday. Around 40 students from various schools in and around Port Blair took part in the programme. The students were taken to Chidiyatapu, for watching the birds through Binocular and were taught to identify the birds and its nature in its natural habitat. They were appraised about the unique Biodiversity of Chidiyatapu. After completion of the tour, the students appeared for a “feedback test” on the experience gained by them during the bird watching. Accordingly, J. Pooja Shekar of Kamaraj English Medium School secured first position and K. Citira Banu of Ananda Marga Middle School secured second position while P. Gangotri & Mohd. Popularizing mushroom cultivation at Campbell Bay Campbell Bay, Oct. 11 A step towards popularizing mushroom cultivation on the concept ‘seeing is believing and learning by doing’ was organized by the Department of Agriculture, Campbell Bay in association with at various villages of Campbell Bay. Shri Rajender Pal, BDO, Campbell Bay, chief guest of the programme requested the cultivators especially women to adopt mushroom cultivation for the self reliance and additional income. Awareness on eye donation created Port Blair, Oct. 11 Under National Programme for Control of Blindness (A&N Islands), an eye donation awareness programme was held at ITF Ground here recently with the objective of creating awareness on eye donation among the NCC trainees and staff. Altogether 192 persons attended the programme, of which 171 persons registered their name for eye donation. Dr. K.V. Remana Murthy, Administrative Officer, ATC, Army NCC encouraged the cadets (NCC trainee) for donating eye and other organs of human body. Battle ready ANC prepared to meet contingencies of natural calamities as well: CINCAN Port Blair, Oct. 11 The Commander-in-Chief of Andaman and Nicobar Command, Vice Adml Pradeep Kumar Chatterjee has said that the Command is always battle ready to ensure peace and also prepared to meet any contingencies that may arise due to natural calamities such as cyclones, earthquakes and other meteorological disasters. Addressing the jawans of the country’s only Integrated Command at INS Utkroshin Port Blair in view of its 14th Raising Day, he saidthat the untiring efforts of the Command has helped to safeguard the Islands including the Exclusive Economic Zone and its airspace. The intense maritime surveillance being undertaken with civilian stakeholders has reduced poaching and human trafficking significantly, he said and expressed the hope that the Command’s training activities for the police and IRBN personnel in discharging security related duties would help in ensuring stability in the Islands. Vice Adml PK Chatterjee took pride in the outreach programmes of the Integrated Command saying they have generated immense goodwill among the Islanders. The Community Interaction programmes and JaanPehchan Patrols have contributed enormously to establish good rapport with the people including those staying in the remotest areas, he said and vowed that the jawans would respect the culture and traditions of the people and even contribute to preserve them. He referred to the number of multi-speciality medical camps organised in far flung areas saying, they would go a long way in building bonds of togetherness. Touching upon the geostrategic location of the Islands, Vice Adml PK Chatterjee pointed out to the regional cooperation with the neigbouring countries by way of conducting flawless bilateral exercises. He said the Joint Coordinated Patrols (CORPATS) with Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar and the major exercise of Milan 2014 have drawn the attention of many global fora and widely appreciated. The senior most submariner underscored the importance of the protection of the Islands and the waters in the security calculus of the nation. He appealed to think beyond the individual services but to synergise with each other so that the best practices of every wing of the Armed Forces could be replicated in the other while retaining their core competencies. He lauded the idea of having an Integrated Command in Andaman and Nicobar saying it has become an inspiration now. He said the resolve of the Command is to strengthen security, keeping in mind the economic wellbeing of the local populace and the ecology of the region. He also praised the efforts of the Welfare Associations run by the ladies towards the welfare of families of the service personnel and weaker sections in the society. Broiler ducks Vigova Super-M introduced in Isles Port Blair, Oct. 11 To strengthen duck rearing in these Islands the department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services has introduced broiler variety ducks Vigova super-M under the on-going duck breeding policy by the department. This is first in the Island that such kind of broiler variety ducks are being introduced. Vigova super-M duck is a dual purpose breed snow-white colour best suited for meat, imported from Vietnam under bilateral program between Government of India and Vietnam during the year 1996. These ducks have been procured from Kerala by the department after their successful rearing there. These ducks are disease resistant, ideally suited for the sub-tropical climate as well as adoptable for intensive farming, a communication said. Income Tax Deptt. all set to achieve target: PCCIT Port Blair, Oct. 11 The Income Tax Department in the Islands is geared up to achieve the target set for the current financial year. This was stated by the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (PCCIT), West Bengal & Sikkim, Shri Girish Narayan Pande at a press conference held in the Income Tax Office premises here today. He said that the Department has successfully collected Rs.17.82 crore last year and the target of Rs.21.61 crore has been fixed for the current financial year. The PCCIT further informed that under tax deduction at sources (TDS) Rs.22.55 crore was collected last year and this year targeted has been fixed at Rs.27.06 crore. During the current financial year, the Department has collected Rs.6.03 crore under its budget target upto September 2014. Similarly, Rs.0.20 crores cash collection have been achieved during the current year upto September 2014. The Department is also undertaking strict monitoring of non-filing/stop filing of income tax by the assessees, he said. Regarding specific activities to be taxed the PCCIT said as such no specific activities have been identified. However, there is growth in tourism and fisheries sectors which can be further develop and exploited for the further economic development of the islands, he added. Police recovered bhatti articles Port Blair, Oct. 11 Acting on a tip of information, a Police team comprising of SI M. Saravanan, Head Constable B. Praveen, Constable Manpal Singh, Mohd. Haneefa, N.C. Sarkar, Augusting Kerketta, J.D. Bairagi, lady constable Indumati and HGs Shanmugam, Sherlin Charles of Central Crime Station conducted jungle search at Burmanallah no.5 and Sagwan plot area and recovered Bhatti articles along with 2 irun drums containing 400 liters fermented wash. The recovered Bhatti articles and fermented wash were destroyed on the spot.
