30 August 2013 Press Statement by MCA National Youth Chief YB Datuk Ir. Dr. Wee Ka Siong Don’t disregard harassment of SK Seri Pristana students when delivering your verdict I am utterly disappointed that the Selangor Education Department and the Education Ministry had decided to not take action on the Headmaster of SK Seri Pristana Mohd Nasir Mohd Noor with the excuse that he had meant no harm by asking students to eat in the shower room during recess. While he may be given the benefit of the doubt in this aspect, it must be noted that there are other points which must be acted upon by the authorities. They must look into the allegations of severe bullying, ostrasisation and racial slurs by both teachers and classmates towards the whistleblower’s daughter as well as to the children of other parents who had similarly lodged reports against the headmaster although the headmaster denied such occurrences. There is also the issue of allowing a stranger to enter the school to take pictures of the certain pupils who happen to be of the same race and not others. Questions must be answered such as who the unidentified photographer was and what the person intends to do with these photographs? What sort of guarantees can the school authorities give to ensure the photos are not misused ? The public will want to know why a stranger was allowed into the school in the first place as it jeopardizes their children’s safety. Moreover, another area the Education Ministry or Selangor Education Department must look into is why the headmaster allowed the Sungai Buloh police to interview the students without parental consent, knowledge or presence? While the police claim that they had merely talked to the pupils, it must be noted that having uniformed personnel asking questions can be intimidating to young children. Besides that, these children have rights and do not deserved to be questioned as though they are criminals. Fleeing of non-Muslim students Due to the constant harassment as well as the arrest of one parent by the police, three students have already been transferred with 10 more planning to follow suit. Thus, out of the original 25 non-Muslims students in SK Seri Pristana, there are now only 12 non-Muslim students left. The harassment must stop and suitable action must be seen to be taken in order to prevent this “exodus” lest it be misconstrued as “ethnic cleansing” on the school’s part. Our education system is not only meant to academically groom our young, but is also to help instill a sense of being Malaysian into them as well as how to integrate with the other races here. Therefore, I strongly urge the relevant authorities to review their no action stance on this matter and to look into the points which I have raised.
