30 DAYS of LOVE Today is the 50th anniversary of the 24th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. On January 23, 1964, the 24th Amendment was ratified by the states and abolished the use of poll taxes, which were used to keep African Americans from voting. While poll taxes have been abolished, there are new restrictions that are making it harder for people to vote , particularly people of color, students, and people with disabilities. This voter suppression ranges from voter ID laws, to the elimination of early voting and same day voter registration, to new restrictions on voter registration drives and barriers to voting for people with criminal convictions. The fifth principle of Unitarian Universalism is “The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.” UU’s have always been part of movements to expand democracy in this country from women’s rights to civil rights to safeguarding free, fair and accessible voting in the most recent elections. Today’s message comes from Rev. Hope Johnson, Janice Marie Johnson, and Annette Marquis. Read their blog herestandingonthesideoflove.org/blog/day-6-the-moment-we-were-transformed/ . They ask us to reflect upon the impact of democracy and the right to vote in this country.
