30 Day Film Challenge - Day 12: A Film By My Least Favorite Director Diamonds Are Forever (1971) - Guy Hamilton I almost sat this one out. Directors I dont like or dont care for I usually just move on or avoid their catalog. Sitting and soaking up negativity when theres nothing else to study is something I dont like to spend my time doing. If I havent seen a lot of their catalog, how can I make a fair assessment. Sometimes bad films arent even the directors fault, and some unfortunate souls get carried from bad film to bad film. Then theres people who make bad movies, but then also make ones I like. I went with my least favorite Bond director. Yes, I know Guy did Goldfinger and I personally enjoy Live And Let Die, but he made two of the series worst films proving that Goldfinger was an absolute fluke (Even Live And Let Die, helps to prove that point). His catering to cheap gags and camp without fun is too much for me. Diamonds Are Forever marked this triumphant return after the spectacular On Her Majestys Secret Service and basically tries to flush that film down the toilet upon entry. Connery returns to the role, but taints it because hes absolutely not interested at all. Theres just so much dumb stuff in the film, Blofeld, Kid & Wint, Tiffany Case...and the fact that this looks more like a 70s TV movie than it does a feature film hampers it as well. Its not just a one time misfire, Hamilton would make sure you know that hes not that good by the time The Man With The Golden Gun comes around.
