30 Days of Thanks Day 8: I am grateful for Dr. Carey Robinson of Roanoke, Virginia. When I went to Dr. Robinson seeking LASIK surgery in 2000, I was legally blind. Even with contacts & glasses, I couldnt see well enough to read street signs, exit signs on the interstate, the teachers notes on the board in the classroom, or even recognize people from more than a few feet away. When I read, I had to hold the book so close, that I couldnt focus both eyes on the page, so Id read with just one eye. Activities like swimming were out of the question, because without contacts or glasses, I couldnt see at all, & would become disoriented. It was a constant struggle. In addition to being extremely near-sighted & having severe astigmatism, i had abused my contact leans & the veins had grown thru the lens of my eyes, & my blood sugar was out of control, which caused my vision to vary wildly. No other doctor would consider me as a candidate for surgery. Doctor Robinson took me on as a patient, even though I was extremely high risk. He made me stop wearing contacts & stabilize my blood sugar for 60 days before he would consider doing the surgery. He examined my eyes weekly. When he felt I was ready for the surgery, he told me my vision was so severely impaired, he may have to redo the surgery 2-3 times to get it right, but he would repeat it at no additional charge until it was right. The very 1st surgery, Dr. Robinson corrected my vision to 20/20 in one eye & 20/15 in the other. I was amazed! Never before had I seen birds flying in the sky, or been able to differentiate individual leaves on the trees. I no longer lived in fear of getting lost & not being able to read the street signs. I could see the stars in the sky, the details of the moon, & recognize people across the room. It opened up a brand new world to me! Today, Im still in awe of this beautiful world, that was once just a blur to me! Aside from my education, having LASIK surgery is the single greatest gift I have given to myself. & this wonderful Doctor Carey Robinson made it all possible!!!
