30 Reasons why I Love my Country Series #15 The quality of our houses The only reason I was over Port Zante was to stretch my legs when I bounce up on one commotion between a taxi driver and a set of tourists. After listening I hear a tourist shout “You are a cheat!” So I went closer to get the details of the conversation. The taxi driver tell the tourists “But I show you where the ordinary people live and you still don’t believe.” So me Bertha put on my spokes and asked. “What’s the matter with your Mr Tourist?” Only to hear that the tourists wanted to see where the poor ordinary people in my beloved Federation lived and the taxi man was at his wits end after he went around the island two times at one price and they still did not see the “ghetto” that they looking for. So me Bertha ask the tourists myself ”Its whats you really did wants to see me love?” The one with his camera on his neck turn to me and say “We asked to see where the ordinary people in St Kitts-Nevis live and up to now he has not met the requirement? ”Well if is ordinary poor people house you looking for just watch up there. Put on your glasses Mister” I said. To make peace I asked the taxi driver where he carry them. “Ms Bertha, I carry them through all the village them, I start at Buckleys NHC projects all up on the bypass, down to Half Way Tree and Sandy Point Housing development; the Green Tree project, and all them village on that side. Then I carry them through all the allies down St Pauls, Newton Ground, Dieppe Bay Housing Projects, Saddlers, Belle View and Molineux. I even went up Phillips at no extra cost. We went to Lodge, Ottleys and up through Cabbage Tree Housing in all the phases in Cayon, down Lovers Lane, down Hogsville I even went up to Spooners, I pass through Keys West, Keys East and Keys Central then down Conaree - all up Poorland we reach.” “Up Newtown, Irish Town along the Bayroad and through Shadwell, in Pine Gardens, up New Road - we pass by you next house all the way up to Ogee Ghaut St Peter’s and now my gas tank empty and they want back their money. I tell them all the houses I show them is where ordinary people live. Then the tourists them turn to me and say “But those houses are well built with blocks and cement and have flush toilets even better than in America. They have glass windows and lawns and matching painted wall fences on good size lots with flowers in their yards just like int he suburbs. How could ordinary people in St Kitts-Nevis have upstairs and downstairs houses with two, three and more bedrooms and you townhouses in the city too? Where are the outside latrines like in most Caribbean places and even in Canada? Plus everybody here has a view. You honestly mean is ordinary people live these houses? When we listen to the radio callin programs on WIN FM I thought that we would come here and see ghettoes with people living in shacks and coops and tenement yards. We thought ordinary people would be living in ghauts and caves and get wash out with little rain - not living on prime land like you do here." Man, me pressure start to boil up and I push up my chest, fling back my head, put my 2 hand on my 3 wide hips, stare them in their eye and tell them “Mr Tourist, you get off the ship in the wrong country because if is shacks and coops you looking for- you will not finds it here. This is my St Kitts-Nevis you talking about – is quality housing we have here and more to come! Especially during the last couple years we had a housing revolution, thanks to my government, with over 3000 new houses for ordinary people. And with the HELP program everybody now start to expand. So sorry Sir to disappoint you but in St.Kitts-Nevis is quality housing for quality people!
