31/01/2014 GOV DICKSON URGES POLITICAL CLASS TO PLACE UNITY OF THE NATION ABOVE PAROCHIAL TENDENCIES, AS BAYELSA PDP VISITS MU’AZU Governor Henry Seriake Dickson has underscored the need for political parties to put the unity of Nigeria above parochial sentiments. He stated this when he led a delegation of the Bayelsa State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on a solidarity visit to the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’Azu at the party’s secretariat in Abuja. According to Governor Dickson, a political party should be founded on national interest in order to stabilise the democracy and development of the country, noting that although, other parties exist in the country, none has national spread and concern for the unity of the nation like the PDP. He asserted that the PDP is the only party that encourages inclusiveness in the political processes, stating that it was on this basis that the President emerged from the minority, for the first time in the nation’s polity as in America, where Barack Obama, a black man was given the chance to rule a country of the white. He emphasised that the nomination of Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, a minority, by the party and his eventual election as President in 2011 validates the “Nigerianess” of the Ijaw people. The Governor commended the PDP and Nigerians for making the emergence of a President from the minority region a reality, noted that the development has served as a unifying factor, and should be sustained for the benefit of all regions of the country. Governor Dickson explained that, the Bayelsa State Chapter of the party visited the national secretariat to congratulate the new chairman, Alhaji Mu’Azu for emerging the National chairman of the party and pledged their loyalty and support. While, assuring the PDP National chairman of the unalloyed support of the Government and people of the State, Governor Dickson expressed the hope that the party wouldl be repositioned to retain its victory in the 2015 general elections and urged Nigerians to always support the party. He described Mu’Azu as an astute politician who is capable of achieving the needed consensus and reorganisation of the party for the overall interest of its members and the country. In his speech, the national chairman of the party, Alhaji Mu’Azu, restated his commitment to the unity and stability of the party and the country, contending that the PDP was still stronger than any other party in the country and will therefore, reclaim victory in the forthcoming elections. Alhaji Mu’Azu charged Nigerian politicians to go to the grassroots to take care of the welfare of their people, from whom they seek votes, instead of remaining in the cities to destabilize the polity as well as development processes. The chairman also lauded the development efforts of the Governor Dickson led administration in Bayelsa State, stating that the governor while completing the projects of his predecessors instead of abandoning them, was also massively executing new ones. He stated that Governor Dickson’s administration has embarked on lofty projects such as roads, bridges, flyovers amongst others, adding that his recent visit to the shows that, the State has improved tremendously compared to his previous visit in 1999. He assured the Bayelsa State delegation of the cooperation of the party and the PDP led Federal Government, to support the development of Bayelsa and other states of the federation and renewed the call on Nigerians to support to the PDP, which he noted was the only party that can transform the country.
