...31 Days/31 Horror Movies: Day Twelve: Leprechaun: Origins: ...uh...yeah, right. To a degree, I can appreciate this trend of re-booting or re-imagining something already familiar...trying to make it new and fresh. Such endeavor has been pretty much touch and go, success-wise; however, in the instances where re-booting has failed...well, lets face it: as the old saying goes, if it aint broke, dont fix it!! Such is the case, with the recent attempt to re-invent and re-invigorate (...hey, theres a couple more, to the definition) the cult genre fav Leprechaun franchise. Storywise, weve been here before, albeit in various other scenarios, but in this case, we have a bunch of unsuspecting tourist couples in Ireland, who are coerced into checking out a rustic landmark area, in the middle of the woods, only to find out that the locals that suggested the alluring site, are in fact, setting up the kids to be sacrificed to a menacing demon...our subsequent leprechaun. Now after six previous films, most people...like myself...have really gotten a kick out of the homicidal, wise-cracking, rhyming diminutive creature, which actor Warwick Davis gleefully rendered...and perhaps, we as viewers of the genre, have become far too attached to his classic horror caricature, to consider anything different, visually. However, what is presented in this new incarnation of the series...possibly trying to assume something more closer to the written legends...seems far too different, and seems more like something akin to a troll or ogre, rather than a leprechaun. Same motivations, same killing tendencies...but without the tongue-in-cheek humor. Id say that if the film was monikered as anything other than one of the Leprechaun series, it might have garnished better appeal. Dont get me wrong: what is presented IS good, but in the end, its sort of shoulder-shrugging...a been there, done that sort of thing. In the meantime, stay tuned for Warwick Davis sort of return to the character, when he re-teams up with original Leprechaun director Mark Jones, for...yes, you heard it here, folks...Vamprechaun. Uh, seriously???
