31 July 2013 The Executive Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government, Chief Remember P.N. Ogbe has promised to collaborate with the Oporoma community in one hand, and the Bayelsa State Government on the other, in ensuring a hitch-free execution of the construction of a proposed Nigerian Army Battalion in Oporoma. He stated this when the Chief of Army Staff - Lieutenant General Onyeabo Azubike Ihejirika – paid him a courtesy visit at the council headquarters in Oporoma. Represented by Brigadier General Mustapha Onoyivweta, the army chief enumerated economic development and youth empowerment as some of the multifaceted benefits of the project in addition to security of lives and property. General Ihejirika added that about 80 hectares of land will be required for the project which will house hospitals, schools, maintenance units and others. Responding on behalf of the Oporoma Council of Chiefs, Hon. Target Segibo, who is the Special Adviser to the Bayelsa Governor on Youth Mobilisation, assured that the 80 hectares of land have been approved, understanding that the project will provide posterity not just for the people of Southern Ijaw but the entire state. Earlier, Chief Ogbe disclosed that clearing of the road linking Oporoma and Otuan which passes through the Army Battalion proposed site has already been awarded.
