31 Nights XXII: The Masque of the Red Death (1964)! The way is not easy, I know, but I will take you by the hand and lead you through the cruel light into the velvet darkness. Prince Prospero rules the countryside with an iron hand and a sadists wit. Hes gathering the lands aristocracy to dine and dally, but theres something uninvited coming and Deaths at its heels... There isnt much that can be said about the Corman/Price/Poe cycle that hasnt already been analyzed, scrutinized, or thoroughly discussed. I grew up watching Vincent Price when channels would throw whatever they could find at the screen when they ran out of content. As a child, I enjoyed Prices genteel, showy monsters. The Poe cycle, in particular, seized my imagination and drew me to Poes writings and more horror fiction beyond. Masque is an utterly lovely movie. If youve never accepted Prosperos invitation, do so quickly. Just watch your back...
