(313) Tile is the preferred floor covering in France, and our house had plenty of it. The long hallway on the first floor, which was level with the ground, was covered with a brownish-yellow, rectangular, brick-like tile, as were the stairs leading to the second floor and the hallway upstairs. The tile had a rough surface and was not really attractive, but it kept you from slipping. In the living and dining rooms, a smoother, lighter, yellow rectangular tile was used, and in the bathrooms and kitchen, a small, brick-red hexagon. The tile seemed to be wearing very well, except the smooth tile in the living and dining rooms, which had some cracks and markings. In the early nineties, the house was probably twenty years old.
