32 Years ago today... Welcome to VIRGINIA !!! ... ...the Last Frontier (when one decides to bicycle across the US backwards...from the Pacific to the Atlantic). Yesterday we only rode 32 miles from Pikeville, Kentucky into Virginia and stopped and stayed at Breaks Interstate Park in SW Virginia. We actually pitched our tents, and Camped in a Real Campground, for the first time since Pueblo, Colorado. All the other nights since then, were either in a City Park, someones home or yard, or a church or churchs yard. In the campground we met several people, few pictured below; but not pictured were two bicyclists from South Africa who intended to cycle to the West Coast, so we were able to give them some tips on where to go and where to stay. We also congratulated them on their choice of direction, and said we hoped the winds would be at their backs when they got to the Plain States...those memories, though faded, came up again when asked how the trip, up to this point, has gone for us? So, here we are once again in beautiful mountains; shorter, but much, much steeper than the Rockies. We are nearing 4,000 miles and now can just about predict well be to Atlantic Ocean in less than one week. So, we enjoyed the Breaks Interstate Park as much as possible. Swam in the Olympic size pool, enjoyed the mountain air, the sights, the people we were camping with and just now starting to realize that this is kind of a cool thing we are doing. Its not been two months (May 27) since boarding the bus in Monroeville, PA, and here we are about a six (6) hour car ride North, to back home in North Versailles and North Huntington, PA (thats were Chris is from). But, we couldnt get too bogged down in that type of thinking yet. There were some steep mountains filled with logging and coal trucks to compete with, and another 560 miles or so to cross, and experience, what Virginia had to offer... ...maybe Ill post more on that tomorrow, being we are nearing the end, and looking ahead (a little); we had a fun couple of days in these SW parts of Virginia (Elk Garden and Wytheville) that should be fun and interesting to tell about.
