33 years ago yesterday! not many will know this but Salvador Chava Sanchez was the betting underdog going into this fight against the big punching Wilfredo Gomez. Chava was normally a slow starter; but not on this night! apparently after the Nelson fight Chava was planning to fight for only another year before wanting to study and become a doctor, but imagine if he lived and continued fighting. if he was able to move up the weights like super featherweight or lightweight going into the mid-80s think of who he could have possible faced; he beat almost every future featherweight champions (in his era depending if he stayed at the weight or not) before him save Eusebio Pedroza and may have no longer been at the weight by the time Barry McGuigan got his chance. Beat Lopez x2, Castillo, Cowdell, Nelson, LaPorte & Gomez. Moving up he would surely have crossed paths with the likes of Rafael Limon, Cornelius Boza Edwards, Bobby Chacon, Hector Camacho, Julio Cesar Chavez, Rocky Lockridge, probably Wilfredo Gomez again, Jose Luis Ramirez, Edwin Rosario and maybe Alexis Arguello. Probably one of the greatest packages since Sugar Ray Robinson that would have probably retired a top 10 ATG no question!
