350,000 women die annually from complications during pregnancy or childbirth. Almost all of them – 99% - are in developing countries. Most of these deaths are preventable. – United Nations World Renew is helping women in Bangladesh and Malawi by caring for the health of women and young children. Through our local Christian partners, we are training health workers in prenatal and postnatal care, setting up savings funds for women who need emergency medical transportation or intervention, teaching new mothers about nutrition and the importance of breastfeeding, distributing mosquito nets to fight malaria, and monitoring the health of newborns and young children. Through our partners in Bangladesh, World Renew will train community health volunteers, traditional birth attendants and informal health providers on maternal and newborn care, as well as setting up an emergency fund to transport pregnant women to health centers when emergencies arise. In Malawi, World Renew will focus on reducing the rates of malaria and malnutrition among women and children under the age of five, by training volunteers to visit households and promote improved family health and hygiene.
