36 years ago today on 22 Oct 1978, then vice-premier Deng Xiaoping made an official visit to Japan, becoming the first Chinese state leader since the founding of the Peoples Republic to visit Japan. This took place about six years after the restoration of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations. On this trip, Deng met with Emperor Hirohito and Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda.
