36 years ago today on 22 Oct 1978, then vice-premier Deng Xiaoping made an official visit to Japan, becoming the first Chinese state leader since the founding of the Peoples Republic to visit Japan. This took place about six years after the restoration of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations. On this trip, Deng met with Emperor Hirohito and Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda. He also took a ride on the shinkansen. Marvelling at the speed of Japans bullet train system, Deng remarked, The shinkansen is faster than the wind, like its pushing us to run. At this moment, we really need to run. Two months later, Deng took over the reins of power and became Chinas paramount leader, introducing Reform and Opening Up policies that would change China forever.
