360 Years ago, on 25 January 1655 Andrea Gastaldo, the dukes deputy for heretics, ordered taht Waldenses refusing to convert leave the towns of the region for a list of specified unpland areas; the penalty for refusing to leave was death and confiscation of property. The Waldenses petitioned the duke, but realized that the edict would not be withdrawn, and so retreated to the mountains at the height of winter. A few months later they were attacked by the Savoyard troops, supplemented by French and Irish troops, and on April 14/24 began the massacre known as the Piedmont Easter
