365 Days... A few days ago I said Id show you the lakes progression as it changed with the season. This week we have gone from fairly solid ice, minus its snow covering ( first pic, can see some cracks starting), to almost invisible ice that had pulled away from the shoreline. It was still solid enough to hold ducks, eagles and small animals (our local muskrat). Then we progressed to spongy, pitted ice from the rain and melting as it pulled out even further. But then we got pile-ups where the ice blew on top of itself on a really windy day. Fortunately Pokegama, while not small is far enough from the roads, and the expanse broken up with bays and islands, that we dont get ice blowing out of its banks (usually). Today the ice by the Green Heron has turned a very dark greenish color as its no longer solid and very crystallized. There are also large areas near the shores and some interior that are open. Good thing. Our fishing opener is just over a week away. One thing that struck me this year is how spooky it looks at night. All winter long its been covered with snow, so if there is any light at all the lake looks like a big field of white. Now, since the skies have been so clouded over at night the lake is a big black space of empty. It takes a moment for a sleepy brain to register whats different.
