365 days of music you need to know...Day 13/365 Buffalo, NY has given us some great music over the years, including the ever-innovative and hugely-influential snapcase. Signed to Chicago-based Victory Records in 1992, they released their debut full-length Lookinglasself in 1993, with a scathing yet complex mix of intense hardcore fury coupled with some truly innovative playing that helped to set them apart from the tough guy hardcore prevalent downstate in NYC and up into Boston. There are equal nods to Rites of Spring as there are to Cro-Mags. This is modern post-hardcore, a sound diverse enough to allow them to share tours with bands like Deftones or Madball. They really came into their own with the 1997 album Progression Through Unlearning. Tempo changes and unconventional time signatures meld perfectly with the fretboard acrobatics performed by the group, while the lyrical content mainly focused on individuality and positivity without coming across as preachy. I was fortunate enough to see them only once that I recall, at St. Andrews Hall on the opening leg of the tour for their fourth and final album End Transmission. It was without a doubt one of the most energetic shows Ive ever been to; as well as the last time I chose to jump into a real mosh pit. This track comes from their second album. Named after a dystopian short story by Kurt Vonnegut, the theme is all about discovering oneself and being your own man. The complex sonic landscape created within is unrivaled. Thinking Mans Hardcore, as some call it. Music with a message without preaching at the listener, as well as bridging the gap between hardcore, metal, and many subgenres along the way. https://youtube/watch?v=zvj8HSTXJlY
