365 days of music you need to know...Day 19/365 Starting out as a more traditional black metal band, Norways Dimmu Borgir morphed over time to include more symphonic elements, adding to the bombastic onslaught typical of the base style, and creating even deeper atmospheric themes throughout the music. The real jumping off point for this was on the album Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, the bands fifth album, released in 2001 on Nuclear Blast USA. This version of the track Blessings Upon the Throne of Tyranny is from the live DVD World Misanthropy. This was also the first album to feature Galder, ICS Vortex, and Nick Barker as full time members - Barkers frantic yet perfectly timed double kick drum adds to the backbone, while Galder adds depth to the front end on guitar. ICS Vortex is a unique addition, as his joining to provide occasional, soaring clean vocals is the bands trve metal complement to the actual symphony pieces brought on. It all fits quite nicely. This ties in to my last two posts, as singer Shagrath is the principal driving force behind the aforementioned Chrome Division. This is the other side of his musical coin. A symphonic soundtrack to the depths of torment, yet oddly beautiful in its brutality. https://youtube/watch?v=lLNeJREg3kA
