38 years ago today, I was in basic training and part of this motley crew. When I later worked for the Department of Defense as a civilian employee, this pic was on my wall. My time in the military, however brief, helped me to connect with the active duty service members I was there to serve. But sometimes I felt like such a slacker: Id never deployed, as so many of them had, and were. After active duty for training, I was a reservist until I got my honorable discharge in 1979 and went on to what was next. I hadnt had this pic out of the frame until I decided to take a pic of it to share it with you. So, imagine my surprise when I saw that I had written down the names of most of these fellow soldiers on the back of the envelope that had held the pic. I didnt know everyones name, but most of them are there. I would LOVE to know where these folks are today. A handful of us stayed in touch for years, but then we drifted apart. Ill bet many of them went on to deploy and serve in some pretty challenging circumstances and places. Im glad I had the chance to know them, if only for awhile. (Well, most of them... not the one who wanted to kick my ass. she scared the sh*t out of me:)
