39 years ago today, 29 hard working American men went to their watery graves 15 miles out from Whitefish Bay, when the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald sank near instantaneously in one of Lake Superior’s infamous November gales. To this day, no one exactly knows for sure what caused the Edmund Fitzgerald to capsize so quickly, but it remains one of the biggest disasters and one of the biggest mysteries in Great Lakes maritime history. I know you may be asking yourselves “what do I care,” but I want you to remember that they died hauling iron ore pellets to a steel mill on Zug Island (River Rouge), to provide Detroit and Michigan manufacturers with steel stock. In essence, these men died in service to our local (Michigan) economy. So today, have a moment of silence, and show a little respect.
