39 years ago today, the Edmund Fitzgerald went down in Lake Superior. (This boat actually used to dock about four blocks from my house from time to time.) It was a tragedy that inspired a song. I never cared for the song. I found it boring and monotonous. I used to play a piano bar gig in Dunwoody where people sat at the piano and it was a huge party most of the time. One night a guy asked me for the Edmund Fitgerald song. Sorry, dont know it. What? You dont know that song? Yeah, thats right. He would come in every week and ask for it and every week I would disappoint him. One week he said if I learned it he would bring in his 12 string and play the song with me. I told him in that case I sure as hell was not learning it. Ever. He was really ticked off. For weeks he would sit at the piano and sneer at me. Sometimes for hours at a time. I always made sure to keep an extra mic stand around in case I had to hit him. It was kinda creepy.
