3—DEFINING GROWTH—Add to our Excellence en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arete “Arête” is the Greek word used in 2Peter 1.5 and interpreted as “virtue,” “moral excellence,” or “goodness” by many Bible translators, but this translation is a hermeneutical interpretation that causes many Christians to believe that perfect morality is what God desires as soon as we come to faith. In reality, faith—our connection to God through His word—translates into works when we put His promises into practice in our lives. Only we must do this with what Peter calls “diligence,” “making every effort to add to our faith.” For example, God says, “Study to show yourself approved” (2Tim 2.15). We can study as many are accustomed and simply read the pastor’s notes or a devotional that chews the “solid food” of God’s word for us, like a hatchling eating its mother’s vomit. Alternatively, we can apply “arête” to our faith and make it our life’s ambition to see His word transform into our very thoughts and actions. Am I seeking excellence through the application of my faith? If so, add to that, “knowledge.” (See also Philippians 4.8 for the use of arête.)
