4:45 am Farm Report Ive known about it for a while. But until I turned the page on the calendar in the barn and saw the words Hermoine due, I was able to keep that date out there, in my mind. There has been so much happening here, just with the birth of the calves. Of course, I know that Rais two sows are pregnant. I see them every day. Their bellies are getting bigger and bigger and lower and lower to the ground. But Ive been focused on the cows. Time to pay attention to the calendar and the pigs now. There are two sows here. Hermoine and Lydia. According to the calendar, Hermoine is due on the 26th and Lydia about a week or so later. Theres nothing cuter and more helpless than a newborn piglet. About the size of a puppy when born, squeaking from the moment its little nose is cleared, squirming and wiggling, piglets are truly a delight. Keeping them safe from harm, though is a challenge. Yesterday, I watched the two pregnant sows lumber back to their shelter after breakfast. We have a few things to do to get ready for the Big Days ahead. I have had quite a few piglets born on my farm and Rai has been through this once before. Were feeling confident, anxious, prepared, jittery... Were feeling like....expectant parents. Wow! Have we got some exciting times ahead of us. End of this month, beginning of April... I wont look at May just yet, well maybe....just a peek. Im off to the barn. Ill be back later.
