4/8/2014. Jay Shri Krishna. Today we shall try to understand brief family background of Bhagwan Shri Krishna, His birth and His childhood. Krishna was eighth son of Vasudev and Devki. Vasudev was son of Shur and Marishha. Vasudev had nine other brothers and Prutha was elder among Vasudev’s five sisters. As Shur’s friend Kuntibhoj had no issues, Prutha was adopted by Kuntibhoj and was later called Kunti and was married to Pandu son of Vichitravirya. Udhisthar, Bhima, and Arjun were Kunti’s sons, and Sahdev and Nakul were sons of Pandu’s by other wife Maadri. Devki’s father Devak had younger brother named Ugrasen. Devki was the youngest of seven sisters and all the seven were married to Vasudev. Ugrasen had nine sons the elder among them was Kansa. Kansa prisoned his father King Ugrasen and usurped his kingdom and declared himself as a king. When Devki’s marriage was being ceremonised with Vasudev, Akashavaani told that eighth son of Vasudev and Devki will kill Kansa. So Kansa prisoned his cousin sister Devki and Vasudev and killed their six children: Kirtiman, Sushhen, Bhadrasen, Rujju, Sanmardan and Bhadra. Seventh son was Sankarshhan who later became known as Balraam. The embryo of Balraam was drawn from Devki’s uterus by Yogamaya and was transferred in the uterus of Rohini, Vasudev’s other wife who went underground in Gokul due to Kansa’s fear where he was safely born. So this seventh child was saved from being killed by Kansa. Lord Krishna was eighth child of Vasudev. Yogamaya created deep sleep at the time of Krishna’s birth, so all the creatures except Vasudev, Devki, Nandrai and Krishna, in entire world, went into deep sleep. The same day the Yogamaya was born to Jashoda as a girl child, who was exchanged by Vasudev by physically visiting the Gokul and was brought to Mathura. In the morning when the deep sleep was withdrawn, everybody awoke, Kansa comes to know about the birth and comes to prison and surprises to know that Devki has given birth to girl child. He tried to kill that girl, where in the girl being Yogamaya, flies away apprising Kansa that his killer has already taken birth and is safe in Gokul. So Kansa sends Putana, Trunavat, Vatsasur, Bakasur, Aghaasur, Dhenakaasur, Pralambaasur, Keshi Deitya and Vyomaasur, one after other to kill Krishna, who were all killed by Bhagwan Krishna. Krishna asks father Nandrai to stop the Indra’s worshiping, and instead starts worshiping mountain Govardhan, as it was instrumental to their all prosperity. He also once shows the entire universe in his mouth to mother Jashoda. He also drived away Kaliyanaag, a menance to herdsmen and cows, to Paataal. The main income of herdsmen was selling of milk and milk produce. The people were selling the milk in near town Mathura depriving the children of Gokul of nutritious food, so Krishna forms a Youth Club and they were breaking the earthen milk pots of milkmaids to prevent the export of milk and milk produce to Kansa’s Mathura. Krishna also stopped to pay taxes to tyrant King Kansa and shifted their residence from Gokul to Vrindavan. Krishna’s childhood went very eventful. Each time he emerged as victorious against the all dreadful circumstances. He also proved his leadership qualities in very strategic and diplomatic issues like Indra worshiping, milk export, evading taxes, shifting to Vrindavan, and brought in unity and brotherhood among the herdsmen. He also proved brave, valiant and able warrior in very childhood. All these qualities were to become his signature mark in coming years of upheaval. More tomorrow. May God bless us all.
