4. Before Midnight (2013, D: Richard Linklater) 5. Lone Survivor - TopicsExpress

4. Before Midnight (2013, D: Richard Linklater) 5. Lone Survivor (2013, D: Peter Berg) I was completely unprepared for Before Midnight. It was the 99 cent iTunes rental special a couple of weeks ago, so we rented it without much thought. The movie is almost entirely dialogue and felt slow to me, at least for the first 2/3. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I knew what to expect, which I might have known had I seen Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. I am definitely impressed with the ability of the actors (especially Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy) to memorize all those lines and deliver them well. Their conversation (and their relationship) seemed real, not idealized or exaggerated. However, I’m not sure that was enough to win me over. For balance, my next movie was Lone Survivor based on a true and remarkable story. Assuming the movie is true to reality, how can you not admire the physical torture they have trained to withstand? I think this was a pretty complete movie with a moral dilemma, a touch of character development, tons of action, even some hot bodies (sorry for those of you into women; there were NONE in this movie). I do have to say that Marky Mark may have gone a bit overboard during the scenes where he is being helped, but who knows, maybe that is how one would act when they are severely wounded, dehydrated, and scared. Interestingly, here in France the movie is titled “Du sang et des larmes”, which I believe translates into “Blood and Tears”. This definitely sets a different tone for me than Lone Survivor, but perhaps it is necessary to soften it for an international audience.
