“4. But he himself went a days journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers. 5. ... then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.” (1 Kings 19: 4, 5). That is the Focal Scripture of Streams of Joy Devotional today. When Elijah got to the wilderness, he sat under a tree and slept off. He had journeyed to Beersheba, and then to the wilderness, he was obviously exhausted, and he slumbered and slept off. Elijah was physically overwhelmed and weakened by his journey; his words at that moment did not speak of a national prophet. Notice that an angel came to Elijah and instructed him to arise and eat. The angel did not utter a word concerning Jezebels threat or Elijah’s fear; he only spoke of the need for Elijah to eat. The angel seemed to be aware that Elijah was physically overwhelmed because he was hungry. Friend, when you are physically overwhelmed by the issues of life, look inwards, you just might be spiritually hungry. When the issues you face in life begin to take a toll on you, chances are that you have not fed sufficiently on God’s word. When you lose touch of God’s word, you are likely to stay in touch with challenges that may appear bigger than they truly are. When challenges overwhelm you and drain you of your faith, refresh and revive your inner man with God’s word. When circumstances defeat you, get back on your feet by reminding yourself of what God’s word says about you. Remember, no matter how enormous the challenges of life are, they cannot overwhelm Gods word. Luke 4 vs. 4 captures it aptly: “And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.” Pray With Me: Lord, I will feed on Your word; I won’t be overwhelmed, in Jesus’ name!
