STEM Club (4-H County Club) is meeting on Wednesday October 29 at 5:00 pm at the Fairgrounds. Planned activities include “Foam Boat Racing” Achievement Night – Achievement night will be held at the 4-H Building on the Fairgrounds on November 1st at 6:00 pm. RSVP to the office by October 26th. 2014 4-H Achievement Nomination Form Below are categories for Achievement Night Nominations. Please select a specific award from categories and fill out the reason for nomination area below. For more than one nominee in the same category please submit a new form (For instance Agriculture, and Vet science are in the same category. Remember that the purpose of these nominations is not necessarily to recognize those individuals that have won the most blue ribbons but for their personal growth or effort and work that they display in a given category. NOMINATION ARE DUE BY TUESDAY OCTOBER 14, 2014. Nomination forms for 4-H awards: 4-H award nominations form CLINICS: Insectapalooza is about to celebrate its 11th year of insect fun! Back this year, 35 exhibits, the live butterfly room, the Arthropod Zoo and more. Saturday October 25th 9 am – 3 pm @Cornell University, Comstock Hall. entomology.cals.cornell.edu/news-events/insectapalooza/ On October 14th there will be a fecal clinic held at Southport Veterinary Clinic from 9am to 3pm. Samples can be dropped off prior to this day but samples must be refrigerated and dropped of Mon-Friday between the hour of 8am-12pm. There will be a goat clinic on October 19th from 1 pm to 3 pm at the 4-H building. Details will be forthcoming. 2014 CORNELL SHEEP & GOAT SYMPOSIUM The 2014 Cornell Sheep & Goat Symposium will be held on Friday, Oct. 3 and Saturday, Oct. 4. The hands-on activities Friday will start with a tour of the Cornell Sheep Farm and an explanation of ongoing research and management. The Saturday sessions will be in Morrison Hall on the Cornell Campus, Ithaca, NY. Dr. Dave Thomas, University of Wisconsin, is the keynote speaker and will talk about sheep dairying in North America, and dairy sheep research at the University of Wisconsin. COMMUNITY NEWS: Chemung County’s Fall Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event to be held October 18, 2014 Chemung County’s Fall Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event is scheduled for Saturday, October 18, 2014. The event is FREE and for Chemung County residents only. Pre-registration is required by calling Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chemung County at 607-734-4453, September 29th-October 15th (with the exception of October 13, Columbus Day), 9am-4pm, weekdays only. Registration ends on Wednesday, October 15 at 4:00 pm. Items accepted include ammonia, antifreeze, arts and crafts supplies, household batteries, bleach, brake fluid, cesspool cleaners, drain cleaners, driveway sealer, dry cleaning fluids, engine and radiator flushes and floor cleaners, fluorescent lights (bulbs and tubes), gasoline, herbicides, insect sprays, mercury and items containing mercury, metal polishes, moth balls, muriatic acid, oil-based paint, old chemistry set supplies, oven cleaners, paint thinners and pesticides, photo chemicals, pool chemicals, radiator cleaners, rodent killers, rust preventatives, sealants, solvents, transmission fluid, wood preservatives and wood strippers. Thank you! Scholarships and Opportunities: The New York Junior Fall Festival will hold its 19th Annual Junior Heifer/Steer Show, scheduled for October 10, 11, 12th , 2014 with SUNY Cobleskill. This year’s sale and show will again be at the Cobleskill Fairgrounds. Heifers and steers purchased in the sale will be eligible to show in the 2014 Junior Heifer/Steer Show (excluding the fitting contest). NO ENTRY FEE on animals purchased in the sale. The Junior Heifer/Feeder Steer Show will be on Sunday, October 12th, at 8:00am, starting with team fittint.. The Market Steer Show will be on Sat, Oct 11th, at noon, with the champions eligible to sell (followed by Showmanship). Classes will be divided by age for heifers, and steers will be divided by weight. Entry deadline is September 20th. All Junior Exhibitors and Challenge Participants must be members of the NY Junior Beef Producers. Memberships are $10/ individual or $25/ family and can be purchased on the entry form. All Junior Exhibitors must participate in Showmanship Classes. Showmanship is No-fit, and will be Saturday at noon, following the Market Steer Show. Note: You must have health and registration papers (Health papers from any NY fair are good). The entry fee is $15 per head. There is an additional $10 per head for late entries. There will be premium money paid. Commercial cattle are eligible, and do not need registration papers. For their excellence in teaching about and utilizing agriculture in their classroom, the winning teacher will have the opportunity to: • Submit an application for the National Agriculture In The Classroom Excellence in Teaching About Agriculture award sponsored by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). • Submit an application for the American Farm Bureau White-Reinhardt Award. • Attend the National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference in Lousiville, Kentucky, June 15-19, 2015, with all expenses paid. • Receive a free Food, Land and People training for themselves and their colleagues. • At-school recognition of the teacher and their accomplishments. Eligibility • Certified teachers currently engaged in classroom instruction in the Pre-K through 12 levels. • Teachers must be integrating agricultural concepts into traditionally non-agricultural curricula, • Providing opportunities for students to engage in and study about agriculture, • And/Or utilizing innovative approaches to advancing agricultural literacy in the classroom. • The teacher does not necessarily need to be currently using NYAITC curriculum or programs. • Applicants may be self nominated, or an application could come from an individual or a team of teachers working together. agclassroom.org/ny/programs/teacher_year.htm
